The challenge

Following a fire, the treatment plant of IOK Afvalbeheer and IVAREM had to be renewed within a very limited space, without relocating existing structures—while also improving overall performance.

The plan

Lybover BULK combined 3D engineering with custom-built solutions to merge recovery and optimization: higher capacity, fewer disruptions, and full alignment with the existing setup.

The execution

Through precise installation and carefully planned lifting operations, upgraded components were seamlessly integrated. Durable materials, efficient cleaning systems, and a flexible bypass setup result in a high-performance, future-proof installation.

The Lybover way

Lybover BULK was appointed to rebuild and upgrade the mechanical-biological treatment plant of the waste intermunicipal companies IOK Afvalbeheer and IVAREM after a fire. The challenge? Operating in a very limited space, where existing equipment could not simply be relocated. Thanks to precise 3D engineering, in-house manufacturing, and carefully planned lifting operations, the team succeeded in integrating all components seamlessly. The experience and craftsmanship of Lybover BULK made the difference.

From damage to optimization

The mechanical-biological treatment plant processes household waste that is first biologically dried and then separated in multiple stages. The fire affected the beginning of the process. The feeding conveyor and several redlers had to be replaced, as well as the overband magnet, for which technology partner Steinert supplied a new unit. But the project went beyond restoration. The intermunicipal companies seized the opportunity to further optimize the installation. The 25-metre feeding conveyor was renewed and equipped with a scraper system to efficiently remove contaminants. Belt weighing now ensures accurate measurement of processed volumes. In addition, the capacity of several conveyors was increased.

“Greater capacity, fewer breakdowns and maximum flexibility: that is what we have achieved here together.”
– Michaël De Baets, Business Development & Agency Manager, Lybover BULK

Sustainable materials and smart solutions

Special attention was paid to material selection. Wear-resistant components in the redlers extend service life, while wear plates can be easily replaced. Due to the warm and humid process conditions, several parts were executed in stainless steel. An existing reversible conveyor was replaced by an ingeniously designed one-direction conveyor with a diverter flap, preventing downtime caused by material build-up. Additional belt cleaning systems with scrapers ensure smooth operation, even in a high-steam environment. Finally, a fire extinguishing line was installed above the system, enabling safe restart of the installation.

“The combination of bespoke solutions, sophisticated lifting operations and advanced engineering made this project both technically challenging and unique.”
– Theo De Neve, Product Engineer, Lybover BULK

Flexibility first

Thanks to a smart bypass system, the installation now operates more flexibly and efficiently. Depending on the input material and the desired output quality, part of the process can be skipped. This allows IOK Afvalbeheer and IVAREM to better respond to changing market demands.
