Lybover AIR engineers dusting solution for the new production line of a new generation of compostable coffee filters. The existing lines for the production of Pods and Pads were also part of this project. The dedusting unit extracts a combination of filter paper residues, paper and coffee dust. The filter paper residues are separated from the air flow separately so that they can be used for further processing.

The Lybover Way

Koffie F. Rombouts is a Belgian company that processes and trades coffee. The family business has its headquarters in Aartselaar and trades coffee products for the retail, hotel and catering and office sectors. The company was founded in 1896, when Frans Rombouts started a coffee roasting company in Antwerp, and has had a rich history ever since. For Expo 58, Rombouts introduced the individual coffee filter, which allows you to make individual cups of coffee. In the 1960s, Rombouts introduced the product to the market, and at the same time, Rombouts was awarded the title of Court-Certified Supplier of Belgium. Coffee F. Rombouts stands for quality coffee and has been selling coffee beans, ground beans, coffee pads, its own espresso machines and its ‘one-cup filters’ for many years, which has helped make it famous. In recent years, Fairtrade and organic products have also become increasingly important.

Various products are currently being manufactured at the site in Aartselaar. Recently, a new production line was brought into use for the production of a new generation of ‘compostable’ coffee filters. Lybover AIR was not only commissioned to provide this new line with the necessary extraction equipment. The existing lines for the production of Pods and Pads were also part of this project. The dedusting installation extracts a combination of filter paper residues, paper and coffee dust. The filter paper residues are separated from the air flow separately so that they can be used for further processing.

In addition to the separate waste streams, this heat recovery is an additional sustainable benefit
– Frank Van der Goten, Manager Technische Dienst-Projecten-Facility, Koffie F. Rombouts

Lybover AIR first analysed the current situation by means of a dust survey. This quickly showed that the dust was at risk of explosion. The planned constructive ATEX protection measures on the filter make it suitable for handling a possible explosion in a safe manner. Keller’s Vario 5 eco filter unit guarantees dust-free air extraction outside in the summer, or back into the production hall in the winter. The filtered air is of such good quality that its heat can be recovered. When designing the production lines, Rombouts took into account the possibility of future expansion, which was also incorporated into the design of the extraction system.
